Submissive
BDSMWhat the term means
A submissive is a person who voluntarily takes a following role in a particular consensual dynamic. The term is associated with BDSM, but says nothing about a person’s intelligence, confidence or status outside that context. A chosen role is not a general judgment about personality.
In detail
For some participants the appeal is a clearly structured set of expectations; others value trust, symbolism or the contrast with their everyday responsibilities. The role may last only for a negotiated scenario or form part of a longer-term relationship. Its meaning is shaped by the individuals involved.
Context and distinctions
Submission does not eliminate personal choice. People can define their limits, change their mind and end participation. Dominance describes a complementary position, but the two words should not be confused with stereotypes about men and women. Aftercare and safewords are related concepts often discussed in the same context.
